Refractive index is an important parameter to characterize the optical property of the material. Studying this can solve many problems. In order to ensure the image quality of optical system, measureing the refractive index of optical material accurately has become increasingly important. NIM holds a series of refractive index standards. V-prism refractometer which is in the middle position of the measuring value transfer plays a key role.The traditional V-prism refractometer is a classical optical testing equipment, which has some advantages compared to the precision goniometer and abbe refractometer. In recent years, with the proposing of stricter regulation of the glasses industry, the relevant standard asks the glasses lens manufacturers to mark the refractive index of glasses. Therefore, the glasses measurement and quality inspection departments, glasses lens manufacturers also use V-prism refractometer.The traditional manual V-prism refractometer is using the optical sub-type dial and visual aiming. The instrument has errors in the telescope aiming, reading microscope alignment, lost motion and run error, meanwhile the visual aiming is difficult to determine whether the monofilament line accurately split parallel lines, it is inefficiently to record the angle index and data processing.In recent years, with the rapid development of optoelectronic industry, more accurate, more reliable performance, more compact structure, more intelligent user interface, highly integrated optical and electrical machinery operators of modern optical instruments gradually replaced the traditional pure optical instruments, they all combine today's most sophisticated technological achievements and use the most reliable technical means to fully explore the value of the traditional principles of optical instruments.The new V-prism refractometer is designed base on the above issues, involving optical, mechanical, electrical and software design,including the following:(1) Traditional heavy light spectrum is replaced by a new type of optical cold light source. (2) According to new lines by optical cold light source, design a collimation object lens, and increase a plane reflector in the optical path, making the instrument more refined structure. Re-design the V-prism base, and its refractive index value through measuring value transfer.(3) CCD imaging replace the visual aiming, HEIDENHAIN angle encoders replace the dial using optical sub-type, which make the instrument more intelligent.(4) Increase the mechanical structure of worm and worm gear, with the friction pulley drive to achieve micro-second to realize coarse and fine; design the means of magnets to fix V-shaped prism base;using angle encoders with built-in precision bearings,which achieve linkage of mirrors, to measure the angle.(5) Design software processing programme to directly show the refractive index to streamline operation, which greatly improve efficiency.(6) The uncertainty of measurement of the new V-prism refractometer is analyzed.
