The railway transport system is a large and complicated system. Due to the existence of large amount of uncertain disturbance factors, deviations from original timetable, as well as train delay and conflicts between different railway transports, may be induced. In consequence, regular order of the railway traffic will be disturbed; track capacity will be lowered; transportation scheduling will be more difficult; the quality of the transport service provided will be degraded.China railway transport systems are characterized by high traffic density, heavy transport demand and scarce transport source. Under this situation, it is a necessity to deeply investigate the mechanism of the railway traffic disturbance, and rightly quantify the consequence of different kinds of railway traffic disturbances, so as to optimize the re-scheduling strategy of railway traffic. As a result, the research on the railway traffic disturbance is a key research aspect of TDCS (train dispatch control system) of China railway traffic. It is also the main content of train traffic control and the important premise of intelligent scheduling, with an important significance for improving the quality of railway traffic and service. The main contexts are as follows:(1) The significance of the railway traffic disturbance is presented, the literature review for the railway traffic disturbance and delay at home and abroad is done, which lay the basis for the further study of this issue. The railway traffic system is described; the definition, category and characteristics of the disturbance are investigated; the root causes for the disturbance are generally introduced. Following the investigation in depth, different kinds of disturbance are analyzed and summarized through the examination of the examples from the field.(2) The mechanism of the equipment failure, the traction power supply system failure as well as the signaling system failure, are thoroughly developed. From various aspects of the different actual disturbance discussed above, the mechanism of railway traffic disturbance is reflected, which provides a reason basis for the prevention of the occurrence of disturbance.(3) Two kinds of quantification method of delay time caused by the disturbance are investigated-the expert judgment method and the adjustment coefficient method. Starting with the delay caused by the disturbance, corresponding theoretical calculation formulas are derived. The priority coefficient adjustment method is based on the principle of equalizing the delay cost of different categories of train, so as to calculate the adjustment coefficients of different categories of train.(4) For different types of disturbance, corresponding prevention and management measures are presented, including maintenance window arrangement, disturbance management of traction power supply system failure, signaling system failure, etc. These measures are combined into a comprehensive strategy to minimize the occurrence of the disturbance. For delay which has already happened, it is handled through both manual adjustments by traffic dispatchers and computer-aided re-scheduling algorithm.
