Nowadays, with the continuous expansion of the size of the university campus in China, there appears a sharp " Bicycle Tide " phenomenon on university campuses recently. Based on this starting point, the author had an investigation on the causing facts of this phenomenon. On the surface, this phenomenon is a result of the objective causes like the expansion of the number of the people on campus as well as the expansion of the size of the campus. However, on a deep look, it is caused by several careless omissions on concepts of the campus planning and design. Firstly, while functional partition ", there is a lack of consideration on the actual condition of university campus,as there still exists the " traditional functional partition " planning pattern in which university campuses is simply divided into several single concentrated areas; Secondly, while planning the path system, there is attached little importance on the leading path of the bicycles, and there is few independent paths for bicycles; thirdly, consideration on the specifics on bicycle traffic and parking is still half-baked during the campus design. As to the careless omissions on the campus planning and design, through analyses of various examples, summary and comparison, the author tentatively pointed out several correspondent ways of thinking respectively from the prospectives of establishing patterns of" Rational functional partition ", constructing proper path systems and giving full considerations on concrete designing details. In the end, the author also made a special mention of the means of regulation. This may seems a discipline domain knowledge at first, but in fact the author tried to express that planning and design also need to provide possibilities for the introduction of later advanced means of regulation to guarantee that the regulation plays its greatest role while coordinating with campus planning. Through several superposition of correspondent ideas to remit the biciycle traffic problems by newly designed campuses with larger sizes, the author tried to provide students with a pleasant campus life experience.By investigating the patterns of contemporary university campus planning and design in China, this paper is aimed at guiding the designers to give their full considerations on the students'vital interests during the campus planning and design and avoid becoming formalistic.
