The copolymer of acrylate-co-styrene was prepared by emulsion polymerization, and the kinetics of the polymerization was studied. The results show that the main factor influencing particle size is the content of solid; while the dosage of emulsifier has no influence on the particle size. The time of polymerization increases with the increase of styrene content in the copolymer. When there is no styrene in the copolymer, with an increase of the content of solid the time of polymerization decreases; however, which increases when the styrene is introduced into the copolymer.A series of poly (butyl acrylate-co-butadiene-co-styrene) with different particle size and composition were prepared at the basic of the theory of bi-copolymer. The change of particle size was investigated. The results showed the particle size was controlled by the content of solid. The dosage of emulsifier has little influence on the particle size, but has significant influence on the quality of the emulsion. The composition of copolymer has no effect on the particle size.A series of poly (butyl acrylate-co-butadiene-co-styrene)-g-poly (methyl methacrylate) core-shell impact modifiers (N-AIM) with particle sizes and refractive index of the core were prepared by emulsion polymerization. The dynamic mechanical analysis indicates tri-copolymerization occurred. The morphology results show that the large particles disperse uniformly in the matrix, but small one agglomerates in the matrix. The effect of particle size on the PMMA/N-AIM blends properties was investigated. The results indicate the impact strength increases first and then decreases as the increase of particle size. When the particle size is about 300nm, the impact strength gets the highest value, and the optical property has few diminish. The effect of the composition of core was studied too. The result display the impact strength of PMMA/N-AIM blends changes scarcely when the N-AIM have the same particle size but different composition. When the composition of BA/Bd/St is 70/25/5, the blends get the best optical property, which is close with the pure PMMA.
