1,10-phenanthrline shows the properties ofσdonor/πacceptor, so as 5,6-azahetrocycle[1,10]phenantroline derivatives. Due to the N-heterocyclic aromatic ring and lowers the energy of theπconjugation system, 5,6-azahetrocycle[1,10]phenantroline derivatives have extensive application in many field. Some special properties will be predict while aromatic group attaches to 5,6-azahetrocycle[1,10]phenantroline.A series of Ru(II) of 2-thiopheneimidazo[4,5-f][1,10]-phenanthroline derivatives were synthesized. The complexes were characterized with UV-Vis absorption in different solvents. Three complexes show ability of the photocleavage with DNA.We synthesized a series of 2,3-diarylpyrazine[2,3-f][1,10]phenantroline ligands with aromatic aldehydes and 1,10-phenanthroline as starting materials. The compounds were characterized by 1H-NMR and single crystal X-ray diffraction. We also synthesized the Ru(II) complexes of 2,3-diarylpyrazine[2,3-f][1,10]phenantroline. These complexes were characterized by 1H-NMR and element analysis. The result about UV-Vis and emission indicate that the substituents play a significant role in the optically active of the complexes. Investigation in DNA-binding properties suggests that all five synthesized complexes can bind to CT-DNA with different binding strength. Complex [Ru(bpy)2 (DIPP)](PF6)2 shows the strongest DNA-binding among these five complexes. [Ru(bpy)2 (DTPP)](PF6)2 has the weakest binding affinity.
