The purpose of this paper is to study the activity enhancement and composite technique of the reaction of aluminum based metal powders with water. Aluminum powders and magnesium powders were mixed by ball mill in dry method to realize the aluminum and magnesium composite synergy effect and prepare a metal fuel that is very suitable for water stamping engine using.The effect of the mass ratio between balls/powders and between Mg/Al powders on the structure and morphology of Mg/Al alloy metal powders has been discussed and analysed by XRD, SEM and Laser particle size analyzer. The results show that increasing the quality ratio between balls and powders makes the Magnesium diffraction peak intensity weakening, when the quality ratio between balls and powders arrived 350/5, magnesium diffraction peak disappeared, Aluminum diffraction peak become wider, and further as the increase of the mass ratio between balls/powders, flake particles turns into granular particles and led to the reduction of particle size. While increasing the Mg/Al mass ratio will led to the enhancement of Magnesium diffraction peak and brittleness, also flake particles turns into small granular particles. If the percentage of Mg exceeds 40wt%, aggregation and nonuniformity will occur.TG-DSC analysis result shows that the increase of mass ratio between balls/powders and Mg/Al powders is in favor of the improvement of oxidative activity of Al/Mg alloy metal powders in the air. It lower the oxidation starting temperature and thermal discharge while increase the oxygen enhancement ratio. Through test results of reactive activity of Al/Mg alloy metal powders with water using a simple equipment producing hydrogen we can know that the increase of mass ratio between Mg/Al powders is positively related to the reactive activity.Though the increase of content of magnesium can acquire high reactive activity with water, it will reduce the energy density of metal powders. Therefore,this paper attempt to add other metal powders as active promoters in order to reduce the energy loss. Through the study of the influence of metal types and content on the activity of aluminum-magnesium metal powders,we find that (Bi, Zn, Fe, Ni, Zr, Si)metal powders play positive roles in promoting the activity with water without regard to the morphology of metal powders.Among these metal powders, Bi, Zn, Si can further ensure higher energy density of granular aluminum-magnesium metal powders.
