Epoxy Resins have a great of prominent characteristics, widely used in electrical insulating materials, adhesive, electronic components encapsulation, and printed circut board, etc. Epoxy materials have great benefits in production and life, but there is some potential safety hazard, because epoxy is a kind of flammable materials. So, there is great significance in improving the flame retardant of epoxy resin. At present, halogen-containing flame retardant is used most commonly in epoxy retardant. Halogen-containing flame retardant has good flame retardant performance, but it could produce the toxic materials such as dioxin which injures skin and internal organs when burning.The purpose of this paper is to develop a kind of halogen-free flame retardant epoxy laminate. It mainly includes the following parts:synthesis and characterization of the flame retardant DOPO and DOPO-BMI; preparation and research the reactivity of the epoxy51-DOPO-BMI-DICY; preparation and property study of epoxy-phenolics-DOPO-BMI; preparation and study of halogen-free laminate.Synthesized 9,10-dihydro-9-oxa-10-phosphaphenanthrene-10-oxide(DOPO), and then prepa red DOPO-BMI by DOPO and BMI. Characterized DOPO and DOPO-BMI by FT-IR, and studied the solubility of DOPO-BMI.Prepared two kind of flame retardant epoxy resin mixture containing DOPO-BMI:(i) Epoxy51-DOPO-BMI-DICY; (ii) Epoxy-phenolics-DOPO-BMI, and studied the properties of these two mixture. The mixture of Epoxy51-DOPO-BMI-DICY can not be produced laminates, because gelation time of this mixture is very short, only will keep 10 seconds at 160℃. The short gelation time would make some trouble in the process of "Gum up" and "thernocompression". The mixture of Epoxy-phenolics-DOPO-BMI is a good material to be produced laminates, because its gelation time can reach 150 seconds at 160℃, and it is suitable for "Gum up" and "thernocompression". So, Epoxy-phenolics-DOPO-BMI was selected to be produced into laminates.Prepared a series of laminates using epoxy-phenolics-DOPO-BMI, and studied the properties of the laminate. Studied many factors which influence the properties of the laminate, such as treatment of the glass fiber, the rate of resin containing, filler and the quantity of DOPO-BMI in Epoxy-phenolics-DOPO-BMI, finally got the best formula and the optimal process conditions.The halogen-free flame retardant epoxy resin laminate has good performance, its flame retardant can reach UL94 V-0 level, electrical breakdown strength to 42kV/mm, normal bending strength reach 442MPa, heat resistance index is 175, heat resistance level is F class.
