This paper relates to a new method to modify natural fibers. We have successfully attached nano-size bacterial cellulose to the fiber surface or the gaps of micro-fibers using a strain of cellulose-producing bacteria. Randomly oriented natural fiber composites, such as SF/PLA, WF/PLA, were prepared by extrusion and injection molding process. Mechanics, thermotics and water-uptake properties of composites were studies with different modification of natural fibers. The results shows that the influence of BC(bacterial cellulose) attached to sisall fibers was significant on both tensile property and the interfacial shear strength(IFSS), respectively increased by 24%, and 34.6%. The thermal stability has a certain reduction. After fiber modification with A/BC, the tensile strength of SF/PLA composite with 20% fiber can be increased by 18.01%; with a flexural strength by 10.07%; an impact strength by 18.57%, while the best content of fiber is 20-30%. After fiber modification with A/BC, the tensile strength of WF/PLA composite with 20% fiber can be increased by 27.05%; with a flexural strength by 24.11%; an impact strength by 39.13%, while the best content of fiber is 40%. The wateruptake properties, thermal stability of SF/PLA and WF/PLA composites have a certain reduction.
