The Aesthetics Of Concave And Convex

The Chinese timber-framed structure has a long history with the traditional Chinese culture. The house furniture in Ming Dynasty has carried the excellencies of the timer-framed building, and became a masterpiece in Chinese traditional house furniture design. As an essential craftsmanship in traditional Chinese furniture designs, Sun Mao structure has distinguished itself from the western furniture designs. Therefore, the study of the traditional craftsmanship in Chinese modern design art has become a valuable research subject to the development of the contemporary house furniture design.This study has introduced the definition, origin and the characteristics of the Sun Mao structure, selectively analyzed this structure in Ming-styled house furniture, which is an important treasure both in Chinese Ming Dynasty and throughout the history of the traditional Chinese art and culture; also, this exploratory study has divided the Sun Mao structure into seven pieces from a constructional point of view, and discussed the function and theschematic principles of these different pieces in this unique structural design. The author intended to argue that the concave-and-convex combined Sun Mao structure consists all the major characters in the design art, including the principle of simple and nature, scientific and practical, people-oriented and the integration of man and nature; she argued that these typical principles are the beauty and essence of the traditional Chinese craftsmanship. Meanwhile, the author kept arguing that this exquisite structure is an irreplaceable format and a classical model for the research and development of the contemporary design art; and as for a Chinese, especially for a Chinese graduate student majoring in Art of Design, she has the responsibility to study, inherit and carry forward this outstanding achievement in furniture design.As for the current situation and the evolution of the contemporary house furniture design, the author has summarized the influences of the Sun Mao structure from several perspectives, which including the material, construction, ornaments and the artistic conception; combined with her personal knowledge achieved from her graduation project, the author has made an outlook for the future of the house furniture design. In general, this study was attempted to analyze the patterns conveyed in the contemporary house furniture design, in which it not only contains the traditional Chinese elements, but also caters to an internationalized appreciation of the aesthetics. By looking for the connecting points between the national characters and the international characters, the author argued that to exploit the traditional culture for an appropriate designing concept is a unique decorative language in the modern house furniture design.
