In order to make the fabrication, package and carriage more convenient, there is a working operation in the metallurgy process of nenferrous metal, such as copper plate, steel plate and nickel plate, which is useful to convert the state of products between horizontality and verticality. Unfortunately, owing to its own defects, such as low efficiency and operability and heavy labor intensity for workers and so on, manual operation no longer meets the need of mass production. To satisfy the market's requirement to products with high quality and efficiency, various kinds of turnover machines were invented.Basing on the theoretical foundation of the multi-rigid-body system dynamics, taking a cylinder turnover machine of a Copper Co Ltd. as a research object and considering the virtual prototype technology as a platform, the paper will firstly establish a 3d model for the cylinder turnover machine, then do a detailed dynamic simulation analysis by leading the working process of the model to the mechanical system dynamics automatic analysis software—ADAMS.The paper elaborates the relevant theories on multi-rigid-body system dynamics and analyzes the center of gravity position and force condition of the machine. Besides, the physical model of turnover machine is established by using the Solid Edge software and is led into the ADAMS successfully. And a virtual prototype of cylinder turnover machine is created after having an appropriate constraints and loads. By making use of ADAMS, the virtual prototype of cylinder turnover machine simulates the dynamic movement. At last, the paper confirms that the cylinder turnover machine is with more efficiency and better quality by analyzing the influence on the slippage and movement of plates under condition of different speeds of turnover, and reaching optimum speed, acceleration and other characteristics in the process of the turnover from the simulation of real working conditions. And through the experiment of the prototype of cylinder turnover machine, a real regulation of the turnover speed and the plates scattering can be discovered during the actual production, and compared it with the simulation one, which verifies the accuracy of the simulation results. By actual measurement, the sliding friction factors of electrolytic nickel plate can be obtained, which provides a valuable reference for further study on turnover machine. This paper also offers a theoretical basis for the study and design of turnover machine.
