Because of the excellent properties of Ethylene-Propylene-Diene Monomer, i.e. heat insulation and weather resistance, EPDM can be used as the heat insulator on the motor of the rocket, in replace of the current nitrile/asbestos heat insulation system. The experiment is about the solidification of EMDP at a low temperature, to make it mechanically strong enough for its application as insulator in the rocket in the form of coating material. In this experiment, the function of unsaturated bonds is investigated by means of radical emulsion polymerization, while the effect of allylic hydrogen is investigated by means of maleic anhydride grafting of EMDP followed by acylation. In the course of radical crosslinking, the effects of parameters i.e. temperature, reaction time and the amount of peroxide is explored, then crosslinking efficiency is introduced to characterize the effect of radical crosslinking. In comparison, in the experiment of MAH grafting EPDM, the amount of grafting MAH, the ratio of EPDM to cyclohexane and amount of peroxide are explored, then infrared spectroscopy in introduced to characterize the change in the EPDM chain and tearing strength is used to indicate that the mechanical property of EPDM is greatly improved after solidification. |
