Ferrous metals are wildly used in the fields of industry and national economy for their good mechanical properties. However, there are many complex shape and high machining precision parts made of ferrous metals in actual production, the requests for machining efficiency and machining precision are hard to guarantee by the conventional process of grinding, lapping, polishing. Single-crystal diamond is recognized as ultra-precision cutting tool material used in the world, but the wear rate of diamond tool is too fast to cutting of ferrous metals in conventional conditions. Therefore, the research on tool wear mechanism in diamond cutting ferrous metals has great significance for expanding the application areas of diamond ultra-precision cutting.Based on the principle of tribochemistry, this article analyzes the main factors affecting tool wear in diamond cutting of ferrous metals. Then desiring the test equipment and test program of the test of friction and wear between ferrous metals and diamond based on this theory, and building the relevant test platform. In order to research on the wear mechanism in diamond cutting of ferrous metals, this article studies the graphitization temperature of diamond by iron's catalysis in Argon and air conditions, the discipline of carbon atoms diffuse into work-piece, and the types and conditions of chemical reaction, which occurred on the interface between the ferrous metals and diamond, all of these based on differential thermal analysis and thermal gravimetric analysis. Also, providing relevant data to guide the following test of ferrous metals friction with diamond. On the basis of the above, this article researches on discipline of tool wear from the aspects such as mechanical force, temperature, rubbing velocity and material composition of work-piece according to the test of friction and wear between ferrous metals and diamond. The Dynamometer and Infrared are used for measuring the mechanical force and temperature distributed in the frictional zone respectively, Raman spectroscopy is used for detecting the worn surface of diamond, also, Scanning electron microscopy and X-ray energy dispersive spectroscopy are used for detecting the morphology and changes in carbon content on surface of work-piece. Finally, analyzing the discipline of these factors affecting on tool wear in diamond cutting of ferrous metals, establishing the predictable model of tool wear. In conclusion, providing theoretical foundation for studying the restraint of tool wear in diamond cutting of ferrous metals further.
