High-speed machining (HSM) plays an important role in modern Manufacturing Industry, which is widely used in aviation industry and so on. This leads to the strict quality requirements of tool design. It is a significant way to improve the competitive capacity of a company that developing the performance, reliability and quality of tools, shortening design period and lowering design cost. Based on the couple of the CAD technology and traditional tool design technology, a common 3D design platform of solid carbide end mills is generated in order to mix some gaps within the traditional design methods, as well as to meet the requirement in machine design.The solid carbide end mills are classified according to the characteristics of CAD modeling. Furthermore, the geometrical topological relations within the parameters used in solid carbide end mills parametric modeling are induced. The mathematical models which are suitable for software development have been established.A solution for the solid carbide end mills is proposed. Based on standard part library, case-based reasoning technology, KBE/UGKF technology and secondary development technology, the integrated scheme for the solid carbide end mills is established, which can improve efficiency and quality of tool design.Based on UG, Visual Studio 2008 and SQL Server 2005, the solid carbide end mills design system is developed. The complicated data treatment can be preceded by the database software and the linking technology of ADO.NET, which is to realize the link between UG system and database. By using KBE/UGKF technology, the intelligent design for the solid carbide end mills is realized. The UG NX Open technology is conducted in the system development. The dynamic-link library (DLL) is created with the technique of the Common application programming interface (API) for Microsoft C# and the second development of UG NX. Some functions, such as case searching, parameters calculation, aided design, three-dimensional modeling, two-dimensional drawing automatically and machining simulation of the solid carbide end mills can be realized in the system.
