Metamaterial is a new kind of artificial materials which has special electromagnetic properties mainly defined not by its compositions but its structure. As it was found, its special properties triggered great interest and many works have been done for its application in the fields such as the left-handed materials, perfect lens, tunable electric or magnetic devices, cloak structures and so on. Especially, considering that many materials do not response to terahertz radiation and the devices operating in terahertz range are very limited, it has a very promising application in the relevant research about terahertz wave as we can change its structure to get the terahertz response. And that is why we work on the theory and application of metamaterial in terahertz range.This thesis focuses on the study of the basic theory and the absorption application of the metamaterial used in the terahertz range, including the physical theory of terahertz response and the relation of its structure and property. The structure of cross array and its complementary structure were carefully chosen and analyzed. And the design and verification of the application in some ordinary devices such as absorber, switch and modulator was done in the later work.The main works finished in this thesis are summarized as followed:●Do the detail research about the basic theory about metamaterial and left-handed material. The basic physical model and the transmission line model which used in the analysis about the response frequency of the SRR plus wires arrays and cross arrays structure are all introduced and described.●Carefully introduce the simulation and experiment methods of metamaterial in terahertz range, including the commercial simulation software CST microwave studio (CST), the progress of the metamaterial fabrication, the terahertz time-domain spectroscopy system (THz-TDS) used in the measuring of its property, and some relating data analysis methods.●Successfully design and fabricate a single layer terahertz absorber based the cross array structure based on the existing work. The advantage and possibility of metamaterial used in terahertz range is verified by the simulation and experiment results.●Study about the further application of metamaterial in terahertz range, especially about the feasibility and performance of the terahertz modulator based on the cross arrays structure and its complementary structure.
