The Free Standing Hybrid Riser (FSHR) is a new conception type of riser construction; it consists of a vertical bundle of steel pipes supported by a buoyancy tank on the top. Flexible jumpers connecting between the top of the riser and the vessel are used to accommodate relative motion between the vessel and riser bundle, and greatly reduce the excursion of the riser. The Free Standing Hybrid Riser is a technology used in deep and ultra deep water which is very competitive. It could be used in several of vessels and environment. All-welded design and towing method would be used during installation to reduce the cost, and improve the dynamic response.This paper surveys aiming at the design process of the buoyancy tank at the top of the Free Standing Hybrid Riser, and has done detailed study on the type, function, structural style, present status of application, installation scheme, and development trend of the buoyancy tank. Find out some regularity parameter by summarize the typical engineering and related research projects.This paper also studies the design process and methods of the buoyancy tank, finding out a viable method to determine the principal dimensions and internal configuration. Expounds the main point and analysis mode in the analysis of the buoyancy tank, and then do the check analysis on the overall strength and flexural property of the buoyancy tank during existing case and lifting case. The design for buoyancy tank is a cyclic proof process; the key elements are length, external diameter, number of cabins, and the dimension of core pipes. This paper determined the optimal solution of the key elements, minimize the resistance, maximize the net buoyancy, and optimize the function of the cabins and core pipes.
