Through potted culture, growth and physiological characters of three species ofclimbing honeysuckle, L. japonica, L×tellmanniana and L.×heckrottii'AmericaBeauty', exposed to NaCl stress (0,50,100and150mmol·L-1) for45d wereinvestigated. The salt tolerance of three species was estimated by membershipfunction. the main results were described as follows:1. In low salinity, growth indices of the three such as morphology, root/shootratio and water content was not be greatly affected, and the plants grow normally.while high salinity obviously inhibited the growth of L.×tellmanniana, which wasmanifested that the leaves turn yellow and falling off or even death, root/shoot ratioincreased, water content decreasing, L. japonica and'America Beauty' were more toadaptable to the high salinity environment, although the growth will be inhibited, butthere is less obvious than L.×tellmanniana.2. Salt stress affected chlorophyll content. chlorophyll content of three plantswith the exten-sion of time, the increase of salt concentration gradually decreased, while chlorophylla/b showed a rising trend, which L. japonica and'America Beauty'changed gently.3. With the enhancement of the stress intensity and extension of stress time, threekinds of plant membrane permeability showed an overall upward trend, the MDAcontent and the relative conductivity had the same trend, and the rise of the of L.japonica and 'America Beauty' was smaller than L.×tellmanniana.4. Soluble sugar and proline content of the three plants with increasing NaClconcentration increased, but the rise was different. For the L. japonica, especially ofNa+in the leaves increased significantly with the increasing of salt concentration, butdid not significantly reduce the absorption of K+, Ca2+, and Mg2+.5. O2-generation rate and H2O2content increased when plants subjected to saltstress, and both of L. japonica and'America Beauty' at the beginning of stressdeclined, while L.×tellma nniana had been on the rise. Activity of SOD, APX, POD,CAT of three species shows increased first and then decreased, but different specieshad different extent of increasing or decreasing, the maximum also appeared atdifferent time, these also determined its capacity to scavenge active oxygen.6. At the end of salt stress, the root activity of plants decreased with increasing ofsalt.7. The correlation analysis of various indicators showed that the O2-, RC, MDA,SOD and CAT could be used as reliable indicator to evalue salt tolerance of threekinds. 8. Analyzed by membership function, the salt tolerant ability of the three waslisted in the descending order, L. japonica,'America Beauty', L.×tellmanniana.
