Characteristics of femtosecond laser plasma filament in air have been summarized in this thesis, which includes physics mechanism and model for filament formation as well as a research progress summary of filament induced high voltage (HV) discharge and how to avoid lighting damage with the filament. We present experiments on filament induced HV discharge, and the results show that breakdown distance can be up to 10 cm for 62.3 kV HV with assistance of femtosecond laser filament. In addition, filament length has been obtained by measuring acoustic signal from the filament. Finally, the experimental results from different diagnostic methods, such as HV discharge and acoustic, have been compared.
