Some severe weather events, such as storms, hailstones and tornadoes, are mainly caused by convective cloud, so the research on the recognition of convective cloud becomes an important part in the field of digital image processing.The preprocessing of radar data mainly includes the interpolation and quality of radar data. The raw reflectivity radar data was interpolated from polar coordinate to three-dimensional coordinate system using NVI method so as to avoid the disadvantage of polar coordinate in the radar data display. The active jamming of radar data from Beijing was analyzed on the aspect of quality control. First, the radial energy method was used to process the radar data. Then the method of area statistics was used to remove the noise points and to fill the miss of the information of precipitation echo.Considering the existence of brightband, the template theory was presented in this paper in the process of convective identification. The choosing of the brightband templates became an important part in the process which might directly affect the accuracy of the result, and it proved that three templates were enough to identify the brightband areas. Then, three aspects of radar reflectivity which include intensity, peakedness, and surrounding area were used in this paper for the recognition of convective areas, combining the physical characteristics of the convective and stratiform cloud and the horizontal radar echo structure.
