A Study On The Tourism Development Of Small And Medium - Sized Cities In Mountainous Areas Driven By Traffic

Transportation is one of the essential elements in tourism. It can promote or prevent the development of tourism. For different cities, the degree of its impact is not the same, and it is largely depend on the tourism condition of city. While, as far as we know, the analysis about the driving role of the transportation in urban tourism development is barely discussed in recent studies. Whether the development of transportation is able to contribute the booming of tourism? How to exert the driving effect of transportation in order to realize the development of tourism? What kind of elements is needed during the process of tourism development and how to manage? These questions is leaving for us to investigate.Based on the support of national natural science fundation project "frontier mountainous transportation and tourism spatial structure coupling and related mechanism research". We choose a small-medium city, MaCheng in Dabie Mountain District, as a case in this paper. By surveying the literatures of transportation and tourism development, we study the condition of transportation and tourism, driving effect, driving mechanism in MaCheng. The tourism developing model, driving mechanism and general thought under the driving of transportation in small-medium city at mountain district was further summarized and concluded. This thesis contains following parts:The first chapter, we introduce the historical background of traffic and tourism development, the tendency of integrative development between traffic and tourism and the opportunity of traffic construction and tourism development. Furthermore, we also made a review of existing studies on traffic and tourism. According to the above analysis, we found less attention on the tourism development of traffic-driving small-medium city was paid in previous studies, which highlights the researching necessity in our research.The second chapter, mainly describe the basic conditions of transportation and tourism development in MaCheng by combing field inveatigationand references surveying, especially the correlation of the argument. Result shows that the traffic of MaCheng has different effect on tourism development in different stages: the tourism of MaCheng is relatively lagging, and exist a weak correlation between transportation and tourism development in traffic block stage. As traffic gradually improvement, the tourism gradually develops. In the case, the correlation between transportation and tourism was reinforced. In the fast developing stage of traffic, tourism develop rapidly, which show the strong correlation between transportation and tourism.The third chapter, on the basis of the research in the second chapter, a deep demonstration was further carried out. We selecting tourist trips, tourism income as the indicators of tourism and traffic volume, traffic mileage as traffic developing indicators to implement Granger Causality Test. The data analysis shows that the traffic of Ma Cheng indeed drive the tourism development. Then, the paper study the tourism spatial evolution, which is driven by MaCheng’s traffic, by utilizing Arcgis10.0, and set forth how the traffic driving play and what changes may happen in the tourism elements of MaCheng under the traffic driving. Finally we summarized the general mechanism and supporting facility of MaCheng’s traffic-driving tourism development.The fourth chapter, we chose the method from case analysis to general induction. So, in this section we gradually step into the general summary of development models. Based on the study of developing feature, developing situation and developing direction on small-medium city at mountain district, we found out that this kind of cities face some difficulties in the development of urban economy and need to be transformed immediately. Fortunately, the development of tourism is an important way to improve urban economy in this kind of cites, which highlights the significance of this thesis. As a matter of fact, many disadvantages hinder the tourism development in small-medium city at mountain district. These disadvantages are due to the limitation of the urban resource as well as the unclear direction in choosing the developing model or inadequate use of advantageous conditions to promote and innovate the developing model. Combining with successful case, our study focuses on the discussion of tourism developing model and model selection in the traffic-driving small-medium city at mountain district.The fifth chapter, the ideas of tourism development, including coordination mechanism and realization approach, in small-medium city at mountain district is proposed. Then put forward five steps to implement traffic driving effect and promote the tourism development, namely the traffic ahead, tourism followed, supporting elements and mechanism safeguarding, overall management.In the sixth chapter, we mainly summarized the research conclusion and innovation, then points out the shortcomings and further research direction.
