Marx’s theory of productivity is the basis of Marx’s historical materialism, do not understand Marx’s theory of productivity, will not be able to understand Marx’s historical materialism, and will not be able to recognize the historical inevitability of Socialist System replace Capitalist System either. Contemporary society presents a lot of different characteristics from Marx’s times. The disintegration of socialist state and the existence of capitalistic state for a long time, all of these make people began to suspect the basis of Marx’s historical materialism--Marx’s theory of productivity. Jürgen Habermas, Jean Baudrillard and James O’Connor tried to rebuild Marx’s historical materialism, to replace the fundamental status of productivity, and to create more new theories which suit contemporary society better. This article embarks from Marx’s original, analyzes the scientific connotation of Marx’s theory of productivity. They analyze the viewpoints of rebuilding Marx’s historical materialism, and try to reveal the faults of these theories. They did not understand Marx’s theory of productivity on the whole, so their theory will not carry much credibility. They also cannot achieve the reconstruction of historical materialism; the contemporary society still not beyond the scope of Marx’s criticizes. Today, Marx’s theory of productivity is also feasible.
