Left-handed material is a new material provided with negative dielectric constant and negative magnetic permeability, which get great attentions by researchers recently. This kind of materials is different from the ordinary material follows right hand laws, which has uncommon physical properties such as negative group wave velocity, negative refractive index, ideal imaginary, reversed Doppler frequency shift and abnormal Cherenkov radiation. The applications of right-hand laws which describe the travel direction of electric field and magnetic field have been overwritten by left-handed materials. The cross section of the rectangular waveguide consists of rectangular metal tube, which is one of the most universal transmission systems in the field of microwave. However, waveguide's study faced a lot of difficulties. For example, the low frequency in the microwave, waveguide is bulky, heavy weight, easy to process, but not practical; in high-frequency, the size of the waveguide is too small to process. But the waveguide plays an irreplaceable role in high-power situations, such as in military.By studying the internal principle of the left-handed material to discover the feasibility of applying left-handed materials in the rectangular waveguide, this paper focus on study of the potential application of combining the left-handed materials and the rectangular waveguide.First of all, in the theory of electromagnetic waves in the media waveguide is filled with double negative materials and common materials, the transmission characteristics of rectangular waveguide are analyzed and the relevant formulas are derived. Then on the electromagnetic wave in the double-negative materials with dielectric material with an ordinary rectangular dielectric waveguide transmission characteristics in simulation and on other specific numerical comparison and analysis, which compared with the theoretical validation. After the simulation and theoretical analysis, we decide to adopt a SRR + Rods structure to achieve double-negative material properties and use it as the rectangular waveguide filled with dielectric. By analysising the theories and simulations, we get a kind of good double-negative materials whose electromagnetic wave frequency is in the vicinity of 11 GHz dissemination, and it has got experimental verification.
