The artificial material is a kind of artificial period structure that has special electromagnetic characters. At 2003, the left hand material is reviewed as one of the top ten Research High Lights by Science Magazine. In recent years, artificial material has attracted more and more attentions in research and application domain for their unique characters. They also promote the development of new applications, new conceptions and new microwave devices. And the antenna is an important part of modern wireless communication, the difficulty of its designing is increasing as the exaltation of wireless communication. The current technique is also more and more difficult to satisfy the requirement of antenna designing. Therefore, applying the special function of artificial material to antenna becomes a more and more important research direction. This article mainly analyses two kinds of artificial materials: electromagnetic band gap (EBG) and left handed material. First, the theories and work principle of artificial material are introduced. Then, a split-via structure based on traditional mushroom type electromagnetic band gap is presented, which miniaturized the traditional EBG structure without changing the size of the patch; A new type of self-resonance Spilt Ring Resonator (SRR) is presented which makes debugging simple and easy. Compared to the traditional self-resonance spilt ring resonator, the new type SRR can reduce the vertical size, and then has been successfully applied to waveguide and horn antennas; The composite left/right handed transmission line is analyzed, and then designing a microwave filter and dual-band quarter-wave length of the short line based on simplified complex left/right handed transmission line; At last, the zeroth order resonance antenna is studied and the spilt via is introduced to the mushroom-like zeroth order resonance antenna for reducing the operation frequency; Based on the microstrip-fed zero-order resonant antenna, a reconstruction zeroth order resonance antenna is presented, which have two modes of two kinds of radiation pattern in two states.
