Newton's rings is a typical thickness interference phenomenon, it has been widely applied in the actual production and life, it can be used to measure wavelength of light and curvature radius of lens, to checkout the surface finish,flatness and the distribution of interior stress. Traditional manual measurement has a high cost, long time and big error, it is not easy to long continuous observation, and it can not store the image information. Based on many problems in manual measurement of Newton's rings, a new digital image processing method with computer is presented. In this paper, CCD image acquisition system is used as a receiver to replace the human eyes, adding the relay lens to expand the view field. At the same time, digital image processing, measurement and identification are deeply studied. It mainly includes picking up image information, binary and smoothing, enhancement and clear processing, and image segmentation. On this basis, measurement of Newton's rings diameter and the lens curvature radius can be completed with independent program. Finally, a measurement system on Newton's ring is developed with Windows xp as operating platform and Microsoft Visual Studio C++6.0 as soft tool. Experiments show that the system has high accuracy and speed, which realize the combination of traditional experiment and modern computer, and modernize the traditional physics experiments, show a great practical value on physics experiments teaching.
