Since the birth of the traveling wave tube (TWT), it has been occupying an important position in the field of microwave vacuum devices. Traveling wave tube with its broadband, high gain, low noise, can be characterized by multi-mode work now occupies a very important position in the field of the military, is currently the most widely used in military. Wideband——its irreplaceable characteristic makes traveling-wave tubes in electronic countermeasures, satellite communications and other fields to play an extremely important roles. With the rapid development of modern electronic technology, the requirements for traveling wave tubes have become more sophisticated, due to the development of future military urgently needs to have broadband, high-gain, light weight, small size, compact the advantages of traveling wave tube made to find a new type of the traveling wave tubes with these superior performance have become an important subject of the current development. The slow-wave structure of the traveling-wave tube is the most important factor that affects the characteristics, so the invention of a new slow-wave structure and research are now imminent, in such circumstances, this article brings.In this paper a new type of slow wave structure - a rectangular helix slow wave structure is studied. With the help of the three-dimensional commercial electromagnetic software HFSS, and beam-wave interaction simulation software MAGIC, the rectangular helix slow wave structure is in-depth analysis and simulation.In this paper, the main work and innovation point is as follows:1. With the help of three-dimensional commercial electromagnetic simulation software HFSS, we find that the simulation dispersion curve accords with the theoretical dispersion curve. We also do a comparative analysis of the dispersion characteristics between the rectangular helix slow wave structure and the helix slow wave structure with circular cross-section which has the same cross-section perimeter. We find that the rectangular helix slow wave structure is better to be used in the compact traveling wave tube.2. We do a comparative analysis of the dispersion characteristics between the rectangular helix slow wave structure and the uniform medium rectangular helix slow-wave structure, and compare with and without the simple input and output transfer characteristic, and find out the differences. According to these differences, we can know the uniform medium can smooth the dispersion curve, reduce the lowest work frequency and the work voltage, and extend the bandwidth.3. We use beam-wave interaction simulation software—MAGIC to simulate the beam-wave interaction characteristics of the rectangular helix slow wave structure, and to analyze various parameters on which can affect the output power of the rectangular helix slow wave structure. This can be the foundation for the future production in the simulation.
