In order to solve the medical image storage, management, high-speed transmission, digital processing and reconstruction, picture archiving and communication system (PACS) and the digital imaging and communication in medicine (DICOM) standard were instituted. Because the amounts of digital medical image data are vevy vast, it's necessary to compress the image data for storage and transmission. This paper was centered on DICOM Standards and medical image coding. The major part of this paper was as follows. First, based on DICOM standard, the exchange was achieved from DICOM format to bmp format, which was the first step in medical image code to extract the medical image data. Secondly, the mainstream of the existing image coding algorithms were studied, particularly Huffman coding and arithmetic coding. Finally, wavelet analysis and its application in image coding were systematically studied and embedded zerotrees wavelet (EZW) and the set partitioning in hierarchical trees (SPIHT) were selected as the research core. The lifting scheme was adopted instead of the traditional wavelet transform. With the comprehensive utilization of SPIHT and adaptive arithmetic coding, it could achieve to code medical images and experimental results showed that this coding scheme could improve the quality of medical reconstruction images at a certain range, especially for low-frequency-based images. Finally, in allusion to the particularity of medical images, this paper designed a coding scheme based on region of interest. The lossless Huffman coding was utilizeed in the area of region of interest and lossy SPIHT encode scheme introduced above was used in the background areas. The experimental results show that this method can meet the need of application value in clinical and has some certain value for the medical image data storage and transmission.
