With the dramatic increase of the information resources on the Internet, information retrieval has become the main source of getting information. Consequently, it has become a very important research project and is of great practical significance that how we can make the Internet users find out the web resources they need. As for the academic users, website of document databases is an important approach to obtaining document resources. Therefore, it is remarkably important that how we can help the database users find the document information they need, among which exploring the retrieval behaviors is an essential research project. Through survey, we found that when they meet difficulties in the process of retrieval, the database users tend to seek help from others, unwilling to explore the retrieval methods independently and lacking interest in the instructions provided by the library on how to use the databases. Based on the finding, this paper explored the indirect learning behavior, i.e. the learning behavior triggered by seeking help from others and by observing the retrieval experience of others, in the process of retrieval decision-making by the database users.Around the above research theme, this paper firstly introduced Albert Bandura's social learning theory and the experimental approach of psychology, on the basis of which we carried out an experiment on database users and reached a conclusion based on the analysis of experimental data, which included:First, the database users had a strong will to learn by observing others, and the will was stronger among the field-dependent subjects and those subjects with compliant learning patterns; second, during the process of indirect learning, it was quite obvious that the many database users imitated others' choice of the retrieval methods; third, during the process of indirect learning, the database users exhibited some features of Albert Bandura's indirect learning theory, "similarity" was the primary reference of indirect learning, followed by "excellence". In addition, the kind of subjects the database users may observe to learn was affected by the possibility of reinforcement. Meanwhile, the database users were quite rational, so their imitative behavior was comprehensive; fourth, the effect of database users'indirect learning was quite obvious, which was even more obvious among the field-dependent subjects and those subjects with convergent or compliant learning patterns. In the end, several suggestions were made regarding the construction of database websites on the basis of theory study and experimental results.
