The rapidly increasing amount of digital information has made information lifecycle management, ILM for short, step on the history stage of storage playing as a very important role. From generation to end, information passes the phases of creation, protection, accessing, migration, archive and removing. The implementation of ILM is to storage and process information according to its value and character in different phases of its lifecycle. Hierarchical Storage Management (HSM) can implement ILM effectively, and research and implementation of the information hierarchical management is a great challenge to a large scale data management system.First of all, The thesis investigates the character of the information growth and current situation of the information storage, and then according to the standard and principle of ILM,on the basis of research to the key technology of data classification, information valuation, data migration and data access, designs and implements a HSM-based information lifecycle management system (NOVHSM) in NAS storage network. With configuration management, storage device management, metadata management and information hierarchical management, NOVHSM can manage the data information effectively in its lifecycle. The research and implementation of information hierarchical management in ILM is then presented detailedly in the thesis, including Application Server Agent, Information Data Migration Management, Virtual File System I/O and File System Monitor. As a interface, Application Server Agent communicates with Metadata Management, accepting the commands and reporting the results. Information Data Migration Management is response for moving or moving back the right files between different level storage device and keeping consistency in date migration. Virtual File System I/O implements file-reparse technology, when user accesses the files which have been moved to the second-level storage device, it can make the operation redirect to the right device. Thus in user's view, it seems that these files are not been moved. File System Monitor monitors the file system, collects user operation, valuesthe data, and helps to decide which files need to be moved or moved back.In the end of this thesis is the conclusion and prospect for the future work.
