With the rapid development of data network, optical switch will receive more and more widely application in all optical network. Optical switch is the kernel device that can accomplish all optical switching. The research of optical switch has increasingly become the attentive focus in all optical communication field. Many disadvantges are found on the traditional optical switch so several new types of which are developd to enhance the performande. The magneto-optic waveguide switch is a member of the new types, the advantages of which are as following: smaller vulmu, lower driving current and the fabricating process can be compatible with the integrated circuit process. After the analysis of some technology commonly used in optical switch, a new optical switch named magneto-optic waveguide switch is carried out. This optical switch based on the mode conversion of waveguide theory and the technology of prism-coupling. The key research work include preparing BiLuIG material via LPE,analysing, simulating, modeling and testing of magneto-optical waveguide switch. Employing the formulationg of theory analysis, software simulation together with manufacture of actual devices to do the work.Firstly, preparing waveguide material. After testing,we find the film has good surface rouglness and average grain size, at the same time, the film's Faraday rotation fit the need of device and the optical absorption between 1μm 5μm is low, this facts accelerate the application of device. Secondly, starting from the Maxwell equations, using the feature of magneto-optical materials, detruding and analysing the theory of waveguide mode coversion, studying the different factors effect on the conversion efficiency of TE and TM, and simulating it give the theory suport to the design of device. At last, fabricationg the magneto-optic waveguide switch with integrated circuit and thin-film process and then testing the magneto-optical switch: the switching speed is about 200μs, the change of relative light intensity is about 80%.
