These years, along with the development of the Internet, selling digital products (such as movies, songs and images) through the Internet is becoming more and more popular, because this is a convenient and efficient way. However, on the other hand, the ease of transmit digital product makes it feasible to distribute illegal copies. In this case, the seller's copyright is easy to be violated. Digital watermarking technology is one of the effective and promising ways to address this problem.Since the very first introduction of its concept, digital watermarking has been employed to protect the seller's intellectual property and copyright. A number of watermarking protocols aiming at guarding the seller's benefit have been proposed to track down the distributors of illegal replicas. However, most of them ignore the fairness to the customers and result in being affected by the"customer's right problem". A watermarking protocol suffers from the"customer's right problem"if the seller is granted access to each watermarked copy of a distributed digital content, which is just the content that the buyer finally gets when the purchase transaction is complete. This problem is created by the implicit, questionable assumption that the seller is always trustworthy, which is usually not true. A secure watermarking scheme should be fair to both the seller and the buyer. This paper will focus on how to address the customer's right problem in watermarking research areas.Through richly literature study, the current status of watermarking technology will be introduced, and the evolution of watermarking protocols for tracing the traitor's treachery will also be summed up in this paper. Based on a comprehensive survey both domestically and abroad, this paper investigated the main watermarking schemes which contributed to protect the customer's right, and analyzed the drawbacks with them.To sum up, the main creative achievements of this paper are as follows.1) Investigated the customer's right problem in present popular watermarking protocols which concentrated to traitor's treachery tracing.2) Analyzed the disadvantages of the current methods for fixing the customer's right problems mentioned above.3) Proposed a watermarking protocol based on how to protect the customer's right, by solving the conspiracy problem, the watermark transplant problem. This scheme support customer's anonymity and avoid the third-party attack. In this scheme, the buyer will participate in the process of watermark generation independently, so the seller can not collude with the watermark certification authority to get the plaintext of the watermark. On the other hand, each fingerprint is uniquely connected the digital product to solve the unbinding problem. The working model of the protocol has been proposed to explain the cooperation among different parties.4) Compared the security policies of the proposed watermarking protocol with other watermarking schemes's.
