Phased array radar based on orthogonal waveform, which is also referred to MIMO radar, is the development of the traditional phased array radar. The transmit signals of traditional phased array radar can be combined coherently to form a narrow beam with high gain in the space. MIMO radar is different from traditional phased array radar. The elements on transmit of MIMO radar are divided into a number of sub-arrays in pitch direction. The sub-arrays transmit mutual orthogonal waveforms, and then the wide and low gain beam is formed in space. The new technology brings some performance improvements, such as the better anti-interception performance, better velocity resolution, the advanced ability of low speed target detection under strong clutter.In this dissertation, the MIMO radar technology is investigated and its application in bistatic radar and the main research focus on the following issues:First, the basic principles and signal model of MIMO radar are studied and analyzed. MIMO radar is compared with traditional phased array radar in system structure. Besides, the performance improvements of MIMO radar over the traditional phased array radar counterpart are also investigated and MIMO radar's range resolution, velocity resolution, and anti-interception are compared with traditional phased array radar.Second, the process of signal processing of MIMO radar is studied. Because of differences in system structure, MIMO radar signal processing also differs from traditional phased array radar. In the paper, the main research focus on the principles of matched-filtering, beam-forming, MTD in the signal processing of MIMO radar. The processing sequence of matched-filtering and beam-forming and its amounts of operation are especially discussed in the paper. After discussion, the smaller amount of operation structure is presented. Three processing structures are presented and discussed: (1)'matched-filtering—joint beam-forming'structure; (2)'receive beam-forming—matched-filtering—transmit beam-forming'structure; (3)'receive beam-forming—joint matched-filtering'structure. Third, as bistatic MIMO radar has more advantages than monostatic MIMO radar. some researches are carried on bistatic MIMO radar. The basic concept and main characteristics of bistatic radar are discussed and the basic relationship is studied. Then, bistatic MIMO radar signal model is presented and bistatic MIMO radar signal processing structure is studied.Last, the simulation platform of MIMO radar is investigated, such as signal generating model, transmitting model, signal processing model. Especially, the flow of the signal processing model is discussed in detail. Bistatic MIMO radar simulation platform is also introduced simply.
