As the spacing technique was rapidly advancing, there has been an increasing interest in the rapid scanning of the radar antennas, because any mechanical moving parts necessarily limit the practical speed of scanning due to its mechanical inertia, so the electronic scanning antennas will replace the traditional mechanical moving antennas. Frequency scanning antenna is one of the electronic scanning antennas, and the shift of phase front is accomplished by the variation of frequency, then the main lobe of the antenna/array will scanning. Compare with other electronic scanning antennas, the frequency scanning antenna is lower cost and complexity, and easy to form a large array.In the present work we design a low- profile frequency scanning antenna array using microstrip antenna resonators as elements. It obtains a large scan range and low loss under limited bandwidth. In this paper, we first introduce the broadband microstrip patch antenna, and the aperture coupled microstrip antenna is studied, such a antenna is designed and the bandwidth is more than 22%. Second this paper presents the theory of frequency scanning antenna array, and how to calculate the main parameters of the antenna array, also the processing to design this frequency scanning antenna array.According to the conventional ways to design the frequency scanning antenna array, we proposed a frequency scanning microstrip antenna array which is low loss low cost and compact, also it has a large scan. Here we take a series of new measures to solve the problems such as the loss, bandwidth, scanning angle, complexity, cost and so on. We use the software of IE3D, Ansoft Designer and CST to design and simulate the antenna array. This frequency scan antenna array was designed and fabricated, thought the simulated result we can see that the frequency scan array can realize low loss and a large scan angel.
