Illustrating with BitTorrent and eMule, P2P file-sharing system has made a great achievement in recent years. Whereas, it is becoming much more difficult for traditional streaming media system to meet the requirement in present network context. Therefore, introducing the P2P model in streaming media system becomes urgent and makes which a current research hotspot.Resource allocating method is the first issue facing up to P2P model. Based upon the background knowledge of both P2P system and streaming media system, we analyze the resource locating algorithms in depth, and comprehensively clarify the fact that the index server is the most suitable way for a P2P VoD(Video On Demand) system.Our research is concentrated on the indexing technology for a P2P VoD system, of which the innovative research includes: (1) a fast indexing algorithm orienting source peers, and (2) an indexing technology using software pipelining. These research works to the P2P VoD system, whereas the technology themselves could be used in any ohter P2P systems or fields as well.As for the indexing algorithm, we firstly analyze the importance of source peer oriented indexing. Then we propose a fast algorithm orienting source peers. Finally we prove that this algorithm is capable of optimizing the average delay between peers in a P2P system through experiments, and we prove the time and space cost is acceptable to the service system via benchmark tests.As for the indexing service technology, we firstly analyze the shortcoming of the present server architectures. Then we propose two types of software pipelining technologies, one is the non-symmetric processing pipelining, and the other is the synchronization data pipelining. Finally, experiments validate the effectiveness of this technology, and we observe the performance improvements in varied configurations.Eventually, we present the system design of the P2P VoD system, and implement the indexing server applying the technologies we have proposed.
