Based on the prominent demand of constructing an integrated network, hence expanding internet to space, we investigated the outline of integrated space-ground network system. An integrated space-ground network system is mainly composed of space segment and terrestrial segment connected by gateway links. This structure could provide high capacity/high throughput and highly reliable global addressability at the cost of high propagation delay and expensive construction cost. In this paper,we focused on improving survivability together with integrated resource optimization and the application of standard network protocols in the integrated space-ground network system. In spite of its bandwidth limit and comparatively low survivability, gateway link which connects ground stations with spacecraft is still the only way to support space segment and terrestrial component communication. A single link failure may lead to the failure of all the traffic traversing the link, and results in significant loss. Hence we introduce a kind of protection to enhance fault-tolerance of our network. Some extra bandwidth to every ground station is properly assigned as the backup bandwidth for some ground station else. Thus we could preserve some traffic while some of the gateway links failed. We also proposed a heuristic algorithm of optimized shared protection and bandwidth assignment (OSPBA algorithm). The simulation show that our scheme could greatly improve integrated resource utilization ratio. To provide global addressability and standard network protocols and applications for future space missions,we introduced work being done by the Operating Missions as Nodes on the Internet (OMNI) project to demonstrate the application of Internet communication technologies to space communication. Due to the effects of long propagation delays and high link error rates, current TCP protocols over IP-based networks in space could not achieve acceptable throughput performance. Thus in this paper we introduced a new congestion control scheme called TCP-Peach,which was specially designed for links with high bit error rate to promote resource utilization ratio and fair share of network resources. Considering the long propagation delay of our network,we introduced a TCP performance enhancing proxy (PEP) mechanism and load TCP-Peach over the TCP proxy. Finally, our analysis and simulation results revealed that we confirmed the effect of our hybrid solution in terms of throughput, traffic delay, and resource utilization ratio.
