Recently, frequency coded radar has evolved rapidly and has wide application. In this paper, we focus on the detection for frequency coded radar and propose a target detection scheme based on the jointly use of Costas and Pushing frequency sequences signals. Furthermore, the efficacy of this scheme has been verified via computer simulations. The main contents of this paper are as follows:Firstly, we introduce the definitions, constructions and properties of Costas and Pushing sequences. Secondly, we derive the general ambiguity function expression for frequency coded signals. Then, we analyze the ambiguity function of Costas and Pushing sequences by simulations to find the merits and shortcomings of these two sequences. When using Costas sequences alone, week targets might be masked by strong targets. Finally, we propose a scheme which combines the Costas frequency coded sequences and Pushing frequency coded sequences for target detection. The effectiveness of the proposed scheme is examined via simulations. The results show that jointly use of Costas and Pushing frequency coded sequences can solve the masking problem of week targets which are around the strong targets. As is know, the targets masking problem is always encountered in modern war, therefore, this scheme is of much significance in modern war.
