With improved digital multimedia technology, computer vision theory and graphics processing unit have expanded the applications of 3D graphics. The technology of 3D model retrieval is becoming more and more necessary. 3D Terrain Retrieval which is applied to digital world and geography will become a new approach in those years.The following is the main task of this article:(1) Study the key retrieval technique based on contents of 3D model, analyze the structure of 3D model retrieval system which is excellent at home and abroad. Then design the 3D terrain model retrieval system based on GIS.(2) Apple the improved shape distribute algorithm to 3D terrain feature extraction.(3) Apple the LOD algorithm to features extraction in order to improve the effectiveness.(4) This paper designs a 3D terrain retrieval system-Measure3D as the test bed for retrieval algorithms, which is an experimental frame system. Therefore, some key issues of 3D terrain model retrieval for future research are also discussed at the end of this thesis.The research work is supported by key national science and technology project of the "11th Five-year" plan-"Key technology research and demonstration of Integrated Risk Guardians"(No. 2006BAD20B02).
