Nowadays, digital audio signal processing is widely used in the internet streaming media, mobile equipment and digital broadcast area. In order to solve the bottleneck of digital audio data storage and transportation, data compression becomes a very important reseach task in today's digital audio processing area. Among so many compressing standards, MP3 format is the most popular audio format used on PC, internet and PDA because of its best compromise between wonderful quality and algorithm complexity. The research background of this thesis is based on an ASIC of audio playing and recording which is used on a cell phone platform. The chip core is a 16-bit fixed-point DSP. The MP3 encoding and decoding is realised on this hardware platform. MP3 is not a new technology in nowadays. Today many coporations are not concerning on how to realize MP3 but concerning on how to realize MP3 on a low cost platform. This means that how to do the optimization on MP3 standard is a hot point. It is also the value of this thesis. The thesis is composed of 5 chapters. Chapter one introduces the background of the task and the platform. Chapter two introduces the direction of the audio compression firstly, and then discusses the MP3 compressing standard. In chapter three we introduce the MP3 realization on DSP chip and the algorithm optimization. In chapter four we introduce the whole design system and do the MP3 quality testing. In last chapter we give the conclusion and prospectation. The MP3 algorithm optimise method delivered in this thesis has widely reference value in the application. The fruit of this thesis can be integrated into the low cost multimedia cell phone directly, which has widely application value.
