Image fusion based on multi-source information is a new research field in image processing, which analyzes the characteristics of each fusing image by adopting image process method and multi-source information fusion theory, fuses these characteristics by adopting appropriate strategy on the basis of image space register in order to achieve a whole legible fusion image finally. It has been a hot research field and is widely used in many fields such as automated target recognition, battlefield surveillance, medicine diagnosis, remote sensing, robotics and automatic object detection, etc.In this dissertation, the methods of image registration and fusion were mainly studied. Firstly, the background of research based on image fusion technology and the fundamental research contents are introduced. Secondly, all kinds of existing registration and fusion algorithm are summarized, and then the algorithm based on lifting wavelet transform is introduced in detail. Based on the characteristics of the infrared and visible images, the dissertation presents a registration approach using lifting wavelet transform to extract edge feature points, and improve a fusion method based on features of human vision system. The methods refers many other knowledge such as lifting scheme, edge detection, affine transformation, HVS and fusion rules etc, all these are described and researched in the dissertation. Then registration and fusion experimental results based on these methods are presented, which could indicate that the methods are effective.Finally, the performance evaluations of fusion images have been studied. The performance scheme based on information, statistical characteristics, signal to noise and gradient value are established. Then abundant experiments are done and the results are analyzed quantitatively and compared with traditional methods. From the experimental results, the details in the visible image and the target information in the infrared are preserved effectively, and the contrast was advanced with the HVS algorithm. Hence the scene is much easier to interpret for the observer, which could be useful in application.
