The information industry has made tremendous progress in recent years. With the rapid development of computer networking technology, the information security has been threatened in a number of ways. Since the increasing dependence on networking for users from individuals, enterprises, governments and financial institutions, it is necessary to ensure the usability and security of networks.Denial of Services (DoS) attack becomes one of the most serious problems on network security, since it is easy to implement, difficult to defend, and hard to trace back. In this paper we will study DoS attack and its countermeasures, especially its tracebacking technology. Firstly, the attacking mechanism as well as the countermeasures of DoS is reviewed in detail. Then we will study the categorization of tracebacking technologies and their pros and cons systemically. We will also research the feasibility of packet marking in IPv6. We will propose a new method called DHPPM, a combination of dynamic probability packet marking algorithm and edge hashed packet marking algorithm. The new method will make some changes to the "identification" in the header of IPv4 packet. By sharing the marking load with edge routers of a network, we are able to improve the marking efficiency as well as the tracebacking veracity.
