Future generations of mobile communication aim at a higher transmission rate. They explore reliable and efficient communication methods which can be adapted to an increasingly sophisticated communication environment. Examples include land-mobile communication in urban and suburban regions, and long-distance space communications. Advanced modulation schemes and anti-fading technologies would be the guarantee for high quality communications under such circumstances. In this paper, we analyzed the requirement of a wideband and highly dynamic signal in future mobile communication systems. We analyzed the optimum receiver model of the wideband continuous phase modulated signals transmitted over mobile fading channels. The focus was on synchronization and equalization of the receiver. Several different synchronization and equalization schemes were presented, which were suitable for demodulating the fading-channel-contaminated MCPM signals. We first discussed the mobile channel in details. Aspects including main parameters of the channel, its characteristic functions and modeling methods were reviewed. We then turned to MCPM signals to analyze its characteristics, signal models, spectrum and optimum receiver models for MCPM signals after their transmission through fading channels. In order to analyze the problem in a much clearer way, in the following, we divided our discussion into two main aspects: synchronization and equalization. Algorithms, implementation structures and performances of each aspect were studied in details. We first put forward several synchronization schemes of synchronization (which include signal arrival detection, initial synchronization parameter estimation and interpolation),. All algorithms were based on differential demodulation. Their performances under mobile fading channels were simulated and compared. As for equalization, we demonstrated four MMSE equalizers with different structures. The coefficient updating algorithm was CRLS. Its performance was studied by changing key parameters. Fundamental principles, implementation structures as well as performances under fading channel environment of the four equalizers were elaborated. Also, their performances were compared under such circumstances.
