Visualization of 3D information of cultural relic is an important application of computer graphics and image processing in archaeology domain. Visualization of 3D information can make nonrepresentational data into visual 3D image, which is important for us to analyze and understand these data. The main research contents of visualization of 3D information of cultural relic include model reconstruction, model simplification, real-time rendering, texture mapping and feature extraction. This dissertation combine the national special project "archeology detection GIS and information extraction experimental study", to study these key techniques and develop a system for visualization of 3D information of cultural relic. The main contribution of the paper can be summarized as follow:1. Study and realize two different modeling methods aiming at characteristics of cultural relic reconstruction, respectively, Delaunay triangulation and Marching Cubes.2. Put forward a new simplification algorithm based on vertex clustering, the algorithm improves simplification quality by using Quadric Error Metrics to compute the placement of each cluster's representative vertex; analyze and realize simplification algorithm based on iterative contraction, namely Progressive Mesh algorithm.3. Devise a multi-resolution data structure to realize view-dependent Level-of-detail real-time rendering.4. Establish mapping relations for geometric model and texture image, and realize the texture mapping of the three-dimensional model composed of the non-parameterized surfaces; present the method of extracting feature information, these feature information include feature line, contour, normal and incision profile.5. Develop a system for visualization of 3D information of cultural relic and obtain software copyright. Functions of the system include geometric reconstruction, model simplification, Level-of-detail real-time rendering, texture mapping andfeature extraction.
