Fiber loss and dispersion are the main obstacles in fiber optic communication. With the development of optic amplifiers and chromatic dispersion compensation technology, these obstacles have been overcome greatly. In this case, the influence of the polarization mode dispersion (PMD) becomes outstanding especially in high speed and long distance optical communication system. Further more, as the bit-rate of a single channel in optical fiber transmission approaches 40Gbps or beyond, the effect of the PMD can't be neglected. It makes the intersymbol interference and corrupts severely the performance of the system. Because of the impact of the circumstance, PMD shows stochastic characteristics. So it's important to study the statistics of PMD, the study result can provide useful information for further research of PMD especially for the compensation. Based on the obtained results, the statistics of PMD is studied in this paper. First, a summary of the relating concepts of PMD is given in chapter 2, also the expression of waveplate mode, which are the fundamentals for further discussion. Second, there is a discussion about polarization dependent loss in chapter 3, including the interaction of PDL and PMD and the statistical characteristics of PDL, because the PDL has important influence on the statistics of PMD. Then the concepts of statistical distribution of PMD and PDL for a pulse is discussed, and the system impact due to PMD and PDL is also given in chapter 4.The statistical distribution of PMD is the focus topic of this thesis. In chapter 5, we first study the birefringence and Jones matrix with PMD and PDL, then describe the Monte-Carlo simulation, also discuss the statistical PMD distribution with elliptical birefringence and with PDL and elliptical birefringence respectively. The simulation figure are...
