Optical interleaving is a new field of the dense wavelength-division-multiplexer (DWDM) research. An interleaver is a periodic optical filter that combines or separates a comb of DWDM signals. The periodic nature of the interleaver filter reduces the number of the Fourier components required for a flat passband and high-isolation rejection band. An interleaver can be combined with existing DWDM filters to immediately extend its application to narrower channel spacing or take advantage of specific performance characteristics. The capability is particularly attractive for long-haul system designs that require the highest-bandwidth solution. For this application, the design cycle and cost of new higher-bandwidth systems can be reduced by combining existing thin-film filters or array waveguide grating with an interleaver to create a system with twice or four times the channel count of systems using just the filter or grating themselves. A novel interleaving scheme that based on the high birefringent fiber Sagnac interferometer is brought forward in this thesis. We name it HBFSI-based interleaver. There are many advantages of this interleaver such as good passband shape, sharp edge, polarization-independent, all-fiber, high stability and so on. The systematic and detail theoretical research of HBF Sagnac interferometers, HBFSI-based interleavers and filters have been developed in this thesis through the Jones matrix method. Moreover, a great deal of simulations and experiments are done to verify those theoretical conclusions.Main points of my work are listed as follows:First, rigorous and systematic theoretical analyses of transfer functions of the HBF Sagnac interferometer are developed using Jones matrix method. There is a great difference between our conclusions and outcomes in some paper. It's been certified that our conclusions can depict the experimental results more perfectly.Second, transfer functions of high-order HBF Solc-Sagnac interferometers and Lyot-Sagnac interferometers are derived based on those above conclusions.
