Integration of optical communication devices is the development direction of current optical communication system. Erbium-doped optical waveguide amplifier is a novel optical amplifier after erbium-doped fiber-optic amplifier and semiconductor optical waveguides amplifier, it has received great attention for gain at 1.535μm.Erbium-doped optical waveguide amplifier has received extensive attention because it has several merits, such as low-loss, high gain, small size, low facture cost, small index of noise, small polarization relativity and convenient for integration. It is easy to integrate with isolators, array-waveguide gratings, multiplexers, modulators, switches etc in an optical circuit. Phosphate glass is an ideal material for high erbium-doped. Erbium ion has large emission section in phosphate glass, however, it has small absorb section for 980nm pump light, which can be settled via doped Yb3+.Gain of erbium-doped optical waveguide amplifiers in phosphate glass has been researched. Formula of gain has been developed by rate equations, several factors, such as doped concentration of Er3+- Yb3+, configuration of waveguide amplifiers and pump power etc, have been analyzed to increase gain. Silver film electro-migration ion exchanged technology has been designed to make optical waveguide.Layout optimization of configuration is designed for erbium-doped waveguide amplifiers. In order to decrease device's size and increase its'gain, bend optical waveguide configuration has been made in a small phosphate glass. Optical field intensity has been simulated by beam transmission method (BPM), bend loss has been calculated by used of the method of conformal transformations, gain has been accounted by the method of lines, and different curved optical waveguides have been compared in the last. Via theory testify, bend loss has been neglected when curved radius is larger than 2mm.A novel scheme is presented that can be used to efficiently pump optical waveguide amplifiers. It is based on the coupling between two adjacent waveguides, where pump light is gradually coupled from a non-absorbing pump waveguide into the amplifier waveguide.
