Automated Fingerprint Identification System (AFIS) is started from 1960's, it has replaced conventional method to identify fingerprints with computers. Due to the uniqueness and invariability of fingerprints, the automated fingerprint identification is becoming an attractive alternative to the traditional identification methods. These years, AFIS is applied more and more aspects in our daily life with the development of computer technology, the appearance of cheap fingerprint sensors and effective algorithms. And AFIS is receiving much more attention in both researching and commercial field.Today, most AFIS are the based on PC platform. But the currently developed market has demand more for system's portability and convenience. Besides, literatures wouldn't be published because of the commercial interest reasons, so to design an ideal AFIS is still a difficult research subject. Most AFIS are composed of four parts: fingerprint acquisition, preprocessing, features extraction and features matching. Among them, first two parts are studied in this dissertation. MBF200 is used to capture the fingerprint image and key algorithms of preprocessing are also studied.Further, Preprocessing can be divided into four parts, which are: segmentation, enhancement, binarization, thinning. In order to make the algorithm more simple and accurate, this dissertation carried out some suitable improvement to the preprocessing algorithm, to make it more suitable operable on the embedded fingerprint identification system. The algorithm was realized, debugged and tested successfully with TURBO C on PC , And experimental result shows that the algorithms almost meet the basic requirement of fingerprints identification.
