The Third generation (3G) mobile communication technologies are still expected very much to be developed, however, new generation of wireless communication technologies is emerging and booming, the goal of which is attractive, because of its high quality and high data rate in mobile multimedia transmission. The fulfillment of this unprecedented goal is not so easy, and traditional communication systems using single antenna transmit and receive signals are confronted with a stiff challenge. Traditional technologies, such as the traditional transmit diversity, receive diversity and smart antenna technology, are difficult to satisfy the demands of both large capacity and high reliability in the new generation wireless communication systems. Fortunately, a novel creative technology, namely Multiple-Input Multiple-Output (MIMO), has provided an innovative solution to this problem. MIMO technology utilizes multiple antennas at both transmit and receive ends of the radio link to multiply the capacity and reliability by fully exploiting the space resource within the same frequency band at no additional power expenditure. However, many problems are emerging and urgently needed to be solved in the MIMO communication system due to the introduction of multiple antennas. An excellent performance of the multi-antenna system ensures that the MIMO system achieve its advantages. This dissertation, sponsored by the project of"the Novel Types of Antennas and Diversity Technology"which is one part of the 863 Program, focuses on the multi-antenna design for wireless handsets in the MIMO system. With the overview of the principle of the multi-antenna used in mobile terminals, the thesis introduces the design method of multiply antennas, brings forward three types of wearable antennas and three types of microstrip patch antennas applied in handheld terminals. All of those antennas are measured and have good results.First, the research background is reviewed, the development and defects of the current mobile communication systems are summarized and the inevitability of using MIMO technologies is discussed. Then this dissertation systematically expatiates on MIMO technologies, including the evolution of the traditional single-input single-output...
