Web-based Remote Meter Reading System

With the development of economy and the improvement of people' s living standards, house meters, such as ammeter, water meter and gas meter, are used more widely. At the same time, reading the meters has become a mass and troublesome work. As for the readers from different company only responsibility for there own company' s meter, it reduce in the consumer' s peace life is frequently disturbed by their different meter' s reader. That means the traditional ways of reading meters no longer adapt to the development of society any more. However, with the development and widely application of computer technology and communication technology, it makes the AMR (Automatic Meter Reading) system based web possible. The application of AMR systems will not only substitute the manual work but also represent the development direction of the future house facilities.This paper introduces the present situation of AMR systems in the world first, then analyzes and compares the advantages and disadvantages of different existent AMR systems; Based on that , a Web based AMR scheme is designed in this thesis. The advantages of this scheme over other AMR systems are: we can get the meter' s number just from the meter' s image which can be obtained by a digital camera directly. The system is easy setting and without any need of refitting of the existing meters. Also, it can read all of the meters including ammeter, water meter and gas meter by the same system. A valid automatic recognition algorithm of the meter' s image is also presented in this paper. At last, the thesis gives the conclusion of the key problems of this proposal and the future development of AMR technology.
