The 3rd Generation (3G) mobile communication network is getting optimized through the continuous planning, testing and optimization. The packet switched (PS) traffic in the 3G network is continually increasing, thus, the PS traffic model not only has great impact on the accuracy of the system performance evaluation, but also provides the foundation for the 3G network planning and optimization. In order to do research on the network performance and load testing of the 3G network, it is very important to choose the accurate network traffic model. The modeling method of the traffic model, as well as its implementation and application in the 3G system load testing, is a valuable research issue.Firstly, this thesis researches on the basic theory of the PS traffic model, which is used for implementing the 3G load testing simulator -- Loadbox. Then, a serial of PS traffic models and a method to do capacity dimensioning of packet service for network planning are given. Based on the proposed 3G traffic models, this thesis uses the OPNET simulation tool to simulate the traffic source models in the UMTS network scenarios. The simulation results consist of the aggregated flows of both separate traffic and compound traffic. After analysis, the results verify that the models could simulate the actual services to a certain extent.Based on the former researches, the proposed 3G traffic models are used as the basic input for the load testing. Through software requirement specification, high level design, detailed design, coding and testing, the test traffic module is completely implemented in the Loadbox. The testing results verify the correctness of the traffic model module in the Loadbox. Then, the processing performance of the RNC system which is working under different traffic load is also tested. This thesis finally researches on the self-similar traffic model of the 3G network. The heavy-tailed ON/OFF self-similar traffic model, which has specific physical meaning, is adopted as the simulation foundation of the 3G flow model. Using OPNET simulation tools, the thesis presents a self-similar traffic generator model which is used for the actual UMTS network. The simulation results verify the correctness of the...
