Besides amplitude, phase and Doppler frequency, polarimetric information is the fourth characteristic in the radar echo. The development and utilization of polarimetric information have been paid attention excessively, and the polarimetric radar has been built out. The polarimetric processing is one of the key technologies of polarimetric radar. The polarimetric information in the target scattering signal has great potential on target detection, enhancement, filtering and recognition. Some novel techniques can be proffered for detecting concealed targets, weakening the influences of adverse EM environments, confronting active jamming and recognizing targets. Basic theory of radar polarization is studied firstly. And the polarimetric processing of radar echo, using virtual polarization, is mainly studied in this dissertation, including target polarimetric enhancement and clutter polarimetric suppression. The main contributions are included:1. The polarimetric characteristics and their descriptions of electromagnetic wave are introduced. Based on these, the depolarization effect of object is analyzed and the polarimetric characteristics of the clutter are described briefly, as well as its application in conventional radar.2. The amplitude-phase weight algorithm is studied in the virtual polarization, and its phase shift matrix is modified. An appropriate design project of virtual polarization is offered as well.3. Compared with some exist methods of the polarimetric characteristic extraction, an algorithm based on correlation matrix is presented. It's proved that the method can extract the polarimetric characteristic accurately.4. The target polarimetric enhancement is studied. A lot of polarimetric information data about target and clutter have been collected by a certain type radar. It's proved that the SNR of target is increased effectively after the polarimetric processing.5. Based on the theory of virtual polarization, the clutter polarimetric suppression is studied. The processing result, using the data without target, has proved that the clutter can be suppressed 5 to 20 dB after the processing.
