H.264-based video coding can be widely applied to many fields. The video coding algorithm of H.264, however, is very complicated and too difficult to implement, so the application of H.264 has been limited to a great extent. In this paper, we first discuss the H.264 standard and its development, as well as the coding principle in the video applications. Then, we further study several key issues of video coding. After that, the DSP optimization and implementation of video coding algorithm are researched in more details. The main work and contributions of the paper are summariyed as follows:1. The framework of H.264 is analyzed, and the coding principle is also studied in details.2. According to the motion characteristic of video, different mode-selection methods can be selected in coding different microblock. According to time-space correlation of video sequence, and selecting fast motion estimation algorithm and ending rule, a motion information-based mode-selection and motion estimation algorithm is proposed.3. Based on the motion information, the video frame can be separated into foreground and background. After analyzing coding complexity of foreground area, combining frame-control and microblock-control, a motion-based rate control method is presented. This method can allocate limited bits to different area and keep the buffer stable.4. Aiming at the processing platform of DAM6416P of Wintech company, the optimization of instructions for H.264 vidoe coding is proposed.
