Virtual Reality(VR) technology is a hot topic till today. The desire to create models ofplants has increasingly become a cross-disciplinary process, shared by artists,designers and computer scientists. While many researcher found that various methodsexist to assist with this modeling, they have been overly complex to use or inaccuratein their results. Current methods include L-systems and applications ofevolution-based computation and virtual graph-based languages to construct artificialplants models have been employed by Prusinkiewicz, a computer graphic scientist,Christian Jacob, Jim Hanan and so forth in a long time. A domestic virtual artificialplants laboratory has been founded in China University of Agriculture, which hastaken more researchers and students to have more interesting with it and have morechances to deal with it by cooperation.This paper is for virtual reality artificial flowers based on genetic L-systems. Themethod is using the strong ability to model artificial plants by L-systems combinewith genetic algorithms. Some L-systems classes and rules to model natural plantshave been analyzed deeply in this paper. Problem which need to be resolved beforeanimation also have been briefly discussed. A new concept, Genetic L-systems(GAL),has been presented. GAL integrates the good searching ability from geneticalgorithms. Whereafter, some suitable fitness function have been designed which hassynthetically taken more factors, like positive phototropism and bilateral symmetryand light gathering ability and structural of natural plants into account. Evolution andmultiply is according to population characterized by L-systems' string. A best"quality" plant models are available enventually by above method. Additionally, thetest realized a Genetic L-systems interpreter under WindowsNT environment andDirectX. Algorithms and program have been optimized by the growing strategy ofL-systems controlled by genetic algorithms, that is the special character of L-systemsfor modeling plant. Finally, artificial flowers' growing has been animatedsuccessfully.
